Cultured Stone

Cultured Stone is an exact replica of natural stone used for building. It is cast in flexible molds and hand colored with iron oxide pigments. An unmatched variety of colors and textures provide countless ways to create awe-inspiring custom looks. Made of lightweight aggregate materials, the veneers are approximately one-quarter the weight of full-thickness stone.

Interior Plaster

Architectural Finishes specializes in formal to informal interior plasters. Installation range from the famous Venetian Plasters to the Eastern European-Plasters. These create beautiful natural effects with real plaster and not the obvious imitation of faux paint.

How It's Done

This is a step by step review of the process for a hand troweled plaster with a metallic gold top coat.

Our new clients are amazed at the labor intensiveness of the plastering process. The plaster is installed in multiple layers to get the depth and genuine look of the natural look. Note: The Venetian style requires additional steps.

Step 1

Prepare the wall or ceiling surface

A Base coat of plaster is applied to level and assure a smooth surface to start building the depth of real plaster. This is Variance Alto in a standard Buff color. Steel trowels were used to apply the material and then to pull the material tight for the smooth surface.

Step 2

Base coat of plasters

The base coat is placed in short strokes to start creating a distressed and random pattern. (The plaster is Variance Solido and the color is Amber Waves)

The surface will have some chatter and trowel marks creating small ridges.

Step 3

Pull down the plaster

As the surface drys, the ridges are pulled down close to smooth with a clean dry trowel. The skill is in assuring a smooth surface without losing the distressed surface and the appearance of the short trowel strokes.

Step 4

 Metallic top coat

The metallic topcoat is worked into the surface with a Venetian plaster trowel. This produces the gold over tones in the variegated surface and highlighting the random patterns.

Step 5

Let dry and add your finest furniture
